Broken Car Keys Extraction

Broken car keys happen; let’s get them fixed!

Have your car keys broken? If your key has broken it’s not the end of the world. We specialise in broken keys and can often repair them at the roadside or wherever you are.

What type of break is it?

There are many reasons why car keys break. These keys are made from metal, so they can take a lot of damage and abuse. But over time, their parts weaken and eventually break. The strength and stability of the metal can also be affected by exposure to extreme high and low temperatures. Lastly, any damage to the door lock or ignition can break your key if you force it to turn.

Rest assured, we’ve seen all these issues before and can get you back on the road in a reasonable and timely manner, usually within a couple of hours.

One of the most common broken car key issues is when the key blade snaps. These are one of the easier faults to repair as we can cut a new blade from the original and replace it. If you have a spare key that’s even better as we can cut directly from that.

Sometimes the transponder chip can be at fault and this can be replaced. If you have an older key we can often replace just the blade, saving you time and money in the process.

If you don’t have a spare car key, then you should! It’s just another of the services that we offer.

Broken car key stuck in the ignition

Sometimes the absolute worst happens and the key breaks in the ignition, making it harder to extract. And it’s a little more tricky to fix too.

Most times the key could be worn causing a jam in the ignition itself. Sometimes it’s the opposite and the ignition barrel is at fault.

You may be tempted to use a pair of pliers to forcibly extract the remaining bits of your keys, but it’s not advisable to do so. The only logical way to have it safely removed is to call a professional auto locksmith immediately. Here are a few reasons why a broken key extraction job must only be done by a professional locksmith:

  • Pulling the fragment might ruin the door lock or ignition. Any personal attempt to pull the key fragment may risk making the situation worse because it can potentially damage the keyway further.
  • Auto locksmiths are well-trained and equipped. A professional auto locksmith has the necessary tools and skill set to extract a broken car key. They can determine if the key fragment can be removed or if the entire ignition or door lock needs to be replaced.
  • It saves you time and money. By having your key extracted by a professional locksmith, you will save time and money. If you mess up pulling out the key, having the entire ignition or car door lock repaired would be the only other option. Repairs of that kind tend to be more expensive compared to a simple broken key extraction.

That’s Lock & Roll has years of experience with broken car key extraction and is on hand to help. Whether the key has snapped in one of the locks of the car, or the ignition itself, it’s best to have it removed promptly. And if the ignition barrel has been damaged, we can repair those too – usually during the same callout.

We always quote before we carry out any work giving you peace of mind that you won’t run into a large bill that you weren’t expecting.
